Hair Extension Aftercare
Looking after your extensions doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these five golden rules and you’ll keep your Volumize Hair Extensions looking beautiful for longer.
The 5 Golden Rules of Hair Extension Aftercare
✓ Brush your extensions every day using a soft bristle extension brush.
✓ Always dry the bonds thoroughly after washing—never leave them damp.
✓ Sleep with your hair in a loose braid and never go to bed with wet hair.
✓ Keep conditioner, oils and heat away from the bonds to protect the adhesive.
✓ Book regular maintenance appointments and separate your bonds daily to prevent tangling.
Caring for Your Hair Extensions
Your Volumize Hair Extensions are crafted from premium quality human hair, and with the right care, they can remain soft, silky, and beautiful for months to come.
Treat your extensions with the same care you would your own hair—gentle handling and a consistent aftercare routine will help maintain their natural appearance, shine, and longevity.
Brushing:
Regular brushing is essential to keep your extensions smooth and tangle-free.
Use a soft bristle extension brush to gently brush your hair when it is dry. When your hair is wet, use a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working your way upwards to avoid unnecessary pulling.
Always support your extensions by holding the hair close to the bonds while brushing. This reduces tension on the attachment points and helps keep your extensions secure while preventing unnecessary shedding or damage.
Washing:
To keep your extensions looking beautifully soft and healthy, we recommend washing your hair 2–3 times per week. In between washes, a quality dry shampoo can be used to refresh the roots and absorb excess oil.
Before washing, gently brush through your hair to remove any tangles. While shampooing, avoid rubbing or massaging the hair, as this can cause unnecessary tangling or matting. Instead, smooth the shampoo through the hair using gentle downward strokes from root to tip.
Apply conditioner and any conditioning treatments to the mid-lengths and ends only, taking care to avoid the bonds, as conditioner can weaken the adhesive over time.
Always wash your hair using lukewarm water. Extremely hot water should be avoided, as excessive heat may affect the integrity of the bonds.
To maintain the softness and shine of your extensions, we recommend using a deep conditioning treatment once a week, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends.
When washing, keep your head upright rather than leaning over the bath, allowing the hair to hang naturally. Once washed, gently squeeze out excess water and pat dry with a towel—never rub or twist the hair, or wrap it tightly in a towel turban.
Finally, ensure your extensions are thoroughly blow-dried, paying particular attention to the bonded areas. Leaving the bonds damp for prolonged periods can affect their longevity and increase the risk of matting.
Drying:
After washing, gently towel dry your hair by patting away excess moisture—avoid rubbing the hair, as this can lead to tangling and unnecessary friction.
Using a hairdryer on a low to medium heat setting, dry the bonded areas first before drying the lengths and ends. Excessive heat should never be applied directly to the bonds, as this can weaken or melt the adhesive.
Avoid leaving your extensions to air dry, as damp bonds and prolonged moisture can lead to tangling, matting and reduced longevity. For the best results, always ensure your hair and bonds are completely dry before styling or going to bed.
Styling:
Your hair extensions can be styled using heated tools such as straighteners, curling wands and curling tongs. However, always keep heated appliances away from the bonded areas to protect the integrity of the extensions.
To maintain the health and longevity of both your natural hair and extensions, we recommend limiting the use of heated styling tools to a few times per week wherever possible.
Before using any heat styling tools, always apply a quality heat protection spray to help protect the hair from heat damage, reduce dryness and keep your extensions looking smooth, soft and glossy.
Holidays and Sunbed users –
Sunshine, holidays and warmer climates can all affect the longevity of your hair extensions if they’re not properly protected. When spending time in direct sunlight, we recommend wearing a hat to help protect your extensions from UV exposure and prevent the hair from becoming dry or faded.
If you use sunbeds, always wrap your hair in a towel or wear a protective head covering. The high temperatures generated by sunbeds can soften or damage the bonds, reducing their lifespan.
Swimming –
Whenever possible, avoid submerging your hair extensions in swimming pools, hot tubs or the sea. Chlorine and salt water can dry the hair and may weaken the bonds over time.
Before swimming, tie your hair into a loose braid or ponytail to minimise tangling. If your extensions do become wet, rinse them thoroughly with clean water as soon as possible, then wash, condition and dry them following the recommended aftercare routine.
Colouring & Silver Shampoo –
Our extensions are made from 100% premium human hair and can be toned or coloured. However, as each product may react differently, we strongly recommend carrying out a strand test before applying any hair dye or colour-depositing products, including silver shampoo.
Please note that once the hair has been coloured or chemically treated, we cannot accept responsibility for any changes to the hair or its quality.
Wet hair:
Never sleep with wet hair or tie your hair up while it is still damp, as this can lead to tangling and matting.
After washing, gently towel dry your hair before thoroughly blow-drying on a low to medium heat setting, ensuring both the lengths and bonded areas are completely dry.
Sleeping:
Before going to bed, gently brush your hair and secure it in a loose plait or braid. This helps minimise tangling and friction while you sleep, keeping your extensions smooth, manageable and looking their best.
Final Aftercare Tips
Separate your bonds regularly by gently running your fingers between them each day. This helps prevent the bonds from twisting together and reduces the risk of tangling or matting at the roots.
Always have your extensions fitted, maintained and removed by a qualified professional. Professional application and removal helps protect your natural hair and ensures your extensions remain secure, comfortable and long-lasting.
With the correct aftercare and regular maintenance appointments, your Volumize Hair Extensions can last for up to 9 months, while maintaining their beautiful, natural appearance.
